The Association of the National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) held its General Assembly in Luanda on 16 December 2025 and, by unanimous vote, approved Ethiopia’s bid to host the 5th African Youth Games.
The decision was announced amid celebrations from African sports leaders, who praised Ethiopia’s readiness to stage the continent’s premier youth sporting event.
Speaking after the vote, the President of the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Ethiopia, Dr Ashebir Gayo, said, “We have received the full backing of our government, and Prime Minister Dr Ahmed has personally authorised the state protocol, security arrangements, and the covering of all costs for athletes and staff in the village.” ¹ His remarks underscored the strong political commitment that underpins the upcoming Games.
The Ethiopian government’s pledge includes comprehensive security measures, diplomatic support, and financial guarantees that will ensure a smooth and safe experience for participants from all 54 African nations.
According to the Dr. Ashebir Gays, organisers are already planning to leverage existing sports facilities and infrastructure projects to deliver a world‑class event that showcases Ethiopia’s cultural heritage and growing sporting capabilities.
The 5th African Youth Games scheduled for 2029 are expected to draw thousands of young athletes, coaches, and officials, providing a platform for talent identification and regional cooperation.
