Artisanal Fishermen to Be Exempt from Close Fishing Season Under Mahama Administration

Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Emelia Arthur, has assured artisanal fishermen that they will be exempt from the annual close fishing season under the John Mahama administration, provided they adhere to responsible fishing practices.

During her visit to the Nygeresia fishing beach, Emelia Arthur highlighted the need for sustainable fishing practices. Fishermen must comply with best fishing methods, including observing traditional non-fishing days and avoiding harmful fishing techniques to maintain this exemption.

As the Member of Parliament for Shama Constituency, Arthur emphasized balancing the livelihoods of fishermen with environmental protection.

“By promoting responsible fishing practices, we can ensure the long-term sustainability of Ghana’s fisheries resources,” she stated.

This exemption aligns with Emelia Arthur’s broader vision for the fisheries sector, which includes addressing illegal fishing practices. Ghana had previously been issued a “Yellow Card” by European authorities due to concerns over illegal fishing. The minister is determined to reverse this by enforcing compliance and promoting sustainable fishing.

She urged fishermen to cooperate with the Fisheries Commission’s taskforce, comprising personnel from the Ghana Navy and Marine Police, who will patrol Ghana’s seas to enforce regulations.

Premix Fuel Supply and New Initiatives

Addressing concerns about premix fuel supply, Arthur assured regular distribution once the landing beach committee is formed. The committee will include representatives from fishermen, canoe owners, and the fisheries ministry.

Additionally, she announced the abolition of Regional, District, and Zonal Premix Coordinators to streamline operations.

Support for Artisanal Fishermen

Looking ahead, Emelia Arthur revealed plans to provide high-quality fishing gear to artisanal fishermen on a hire-purchase basis once the economy stabilizes.

This strategic move aims to bolster the livelihoods of small-scale fishermen while promoting sustainable fishing practices for future generations.

Arthur reaffirmed the Mahama administration’s commitment to supporting coastal communities, ensuring their livelihoods are protected alongside Ghana’s valuable fisheries resources.
