Ghanaian football icon Asamoah Gyan has officially announced his departure from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the Bawumia campaign team, just three months before the 2024 elections. In a statement issued on September 11, 2024, Gyan revealed that he is no longer affiliated with any political party and will now focus on his philanthropic work and youth development initiatives.
Though Gyan did not specify the reasons for his departure, he expressed his commitment to continuing his humanitarian efforts. “I am not affiliated with any political party. I will continue with my humanitarian work and help the youth of Ghana in my own small way. Nothing political,” Gyan wrote on social media.
Gyan had previously been involved in the Bawumia campaign and was appointed as the chairman of the youth and sports sub-committee for Bawumia’s manifesto earlier this year. Despite his withdrawal from politics, he reaffirmed his dedication to supporting Ghana’s youth through sports and education programs.
The football legend emphasized that his new focus would be on building sports academies and training centers through his foundations, including the Asamoah Gyan Foundation. He believes that empowering young people through sports and education is essential for the future of Ghana and Africa.
