Maripoma Enterprise Limited has commenced asphalt works on the main carriageway of the Pokuase to Amasaman stretch, part of the extensive Ofankor-Nsawam road dualisation project. The project, funded by the government at an estimated cost of GH¢342.48 million, aims to enhance the region’s infrastructure by providing three lanes, service roads, an interchange, two overpasses, and an underpass.

Progress and Expectations

The contractor has committed to opening the 17.4-kilometre main carriageway section to traffic by early September this year. This commitment was affirmed during a site visit by the Minister of Roads and Highways, Francis Asenso-Boakye, who reviewed the ongoing works and addressed the concerns of local motorists regarding construction-related inconveniences.

Chief Resident Engineer, Kwabena Bempong, indicated that the asphalt overlays on the main carriageway would be completed by the end of August, facilitating traffic flow in the area. He also mentioned that periodic remedial works are being conducted on unpaved sections to alleviate the challenges faced by road users.

Ministerial Directives and Safety Measures

To mitigate severe traffic disruptions caused by construction, Minister Asenso-Boakye directed the contractor to collaborate with the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) to station a dedicated towing vehicle on the corridor. This measure aims to swiftly address breakdowns and maintain smoother traffic flow. Additionally, the minister emphasized the importance of continuing remedial works on rough portions of the road until the project’s completion.

Background and Challenges

The dualisation project has faced several delays due to legal challenges, including human rights cases and disputes over land ownership. These legal hurdles, some dating back to 2022, have significantly impeded progress. Mr. Bempong highlighted that the relocation of utility lines, such as electricity, telephone, and water infrastructure, is essential for completing both the main and service roads.

Despite these challenges, the project’s acceleration underscores the commitment to improving the region’s transportation infrastructure. The completion of the Ofankor-Nsawam road is anticipated to significantly enhance connectivity and reduce travel times for commuters in the area.
