The president of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), Mr. Richard Akpokavie has reiterated its commitment to athlete development and promotion, emphasizing the pivotal role athletes play in the committee’s agenda and the country.

According to Mr. Akpokavie, athletes are at the forefront of Ghana’s sports landscape, driving the nation’s quest for excellence in international competitions.

He made the disclosure during the final day of the Kings Baton relay event held on Tuesday, 7th October, 2025 at the Air Force mess in Accra

“The focus on athletes aligns with the Olympic charter, which emphasizes the importance of athlete development and support in promoting Olympic values. Athlete welfare is evident in its welfare program, which includes elite-level training, mental health support, education pathways, and career development opportunities beyond retirement from sport”. He stated.

President Akpokavie indicated that the GOC will continue to produce world-class athletes capable of competing at the highest levels by prioritizing athlete development.

Mr. Akpokavie’s vision for Ghanaian sports is centered around athlete empowerment, federation support, and good governance. He has assured the more strategic use of funds to directly support athletes and federations, ensuring that resources are used effectively to drive sporting excellence.

The importance of athletes to Ghana’s sports development cannot be overstated. Legendary athletes such as Azumah Nelson, Ignatius Gaisah, and others have secured Ghana a notable place in the history of international sports. By investing in athlete development and support, the GOC aims to build a system where every athlete has the tools to succeed, and every federation thrives.

This approach is expected to drive Ghana’s sporting progress, promoting national pride and economic growth through sports tourism and international competitions.
