Incident Occurs During Festival in Tema Newtown, Investigations Underway.
During an ongoing festival in Tema Newtown, a vehicle belonging to the Eastern Naval Command of the Ghana Navy was attacked, resulting in damage to the vehicle and severe injuries to three naval personnel. The injured personnel were rushed to the Tema Naval Base Medical Centre for urgent treatment. Following the attack, naval personnel apprehended three suspects involved in the confrontation, who were then handed over to the Tema Newtown District Police for further investigation.
As the festival continued, a mob, believed to be part of the festival participants, assaulted the Tema Naval Base in an attempt to free their colleagues. Armed with stones and other weapons, they breached the base’s security, leading to the firing of warning shots to repel the attack. Tragically, two civilians lost their lives during the chaos, though the exact cause of their deaths remains unclear.
The next day, the same mob renewed their aggression, targeting both the Tema Naval Base and the Naval Barracks at Tema New Town (Biekro Barracks). This resulted in significant property damage and heightened tensions within the community.
The Ghana Police Service, in collaboration with the Ghana Armed Forces, has launched investigations into the incident, with findings expected to be released in due course. The Ghana Armed Forces extend their condolences to the bereaved families and urge for calm during the investigative period. However, a stern warning has been issued that any further attacks on naval installations or personnel will be met with an appropriate response.
