Maintenance Closure to Enhance Efficiency

The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition announced on August 11, 2025, a two-week shutdown of the Atuabo Gas Processing Plant in the Western Region, from August 16 to August 30, to conduct critical maintenance. Requested by the Ghana National Gas Company, the closure aims to boost operational efficiency.

The shutdown will halt gas supply for power generation and industrial use, allowing engineers to inspect, repair, and upgrade key systems. The plant, processing 150 million standard cubic feet of gas daily, is vital to Ghana’s energy infrastructure, supporting 25% of national power needs.

To mitigate disruptions, the Ministry has coordinated with power sector stakeholders to implement contingency measures, including alternative fuel sources like diesel and heavy fuel oil. These steps aim to ensure an uninterrupted electricity supply for Ghana’s 6.5 million grid-connected households.

The maintenance, the first major overhaul since 2022, is expected to extend the plant’s lifespan and enhance safety. The Ministry, led by Richard Gyan-Mensah, committed to regular updates, assuring the public of reliable power despite the temporary halt in gas supply.

Statement

The Atuabo facility, operational since 2014, supports Ghana’s energy transition goals. The shutdown follows recent sector reforms, including a July 24 denial of aviation fuel shortage claims, reinforcing efforts to maintain energy stability.
