In a powerful initiative to raise awareness about autism in Africa, Dr. Eziafakaku Nwokolo, founder of the Shades of Life Foundation (SOLF), is leading a 5-day bicycle ride from Lagos to Accra and back. This ambitious event aims to highlight the challenges faced by children living with autism across the continent. The ride, involving a diverse group of cyclists, will culminate in a golf tournament in Accra aimed at furthering autism advocacy.
Dr. Nwokolo, a parent of an autistic child, understands firsthand the struggles many families endure. Through this initiative, she hopes to educate the public about autism and foster greater inclusivity in society. “People fear what they don’t understand,” Nwokolo stated, emphasizing the need for increased awareness and support for autistic individuals in Africa.
Upon arrival in Accra, the SOLF team will join the “Play with Stephen” golf tournament, another event aimed at promoting autism awareness. The dual events seek to create a lasting impact on the understanding and acceptance of autism within African communities.
This initiative represents a significant step toward changing perceptions and improving the lives of children with autism in Africa. By cycling across borders and engaging in public advocacy, Dr. Nwokolo and her team are ensuring that no child is left behind.
