The Black Loopers, Ghana’s table tennis team, showed impressive performances on the first day of the ITTF Africa Cup in Kigali, Rwanda.
The tournament, which commenced on May 12th and runs until May 15th, 2024, at the BK Arena, saw the Black Loopers face off against top players from across Africa.
Emmanuel Commey led the charge with a 3-1 victory over Rwanda’s Prince Gisubizo in his first match. However, he faced a tough opponent in Fabio Rakotoarimanana of Madagascar, losing 3-1 in his second encounter.
Young Israel Aklie pulled off a scintillating 3-0 win over Rwanda’s Shimirwa Blaise, showcasing his skills and potential. Unfortunately, he couldn’t sustain the momentum, losing 3-0 to Idowu Saheed of Congo in his second match.
Cynthia Kwabi gave a tough fight to Fatimo Bello of Nigeria but ultimately lost 3-1. Joanita Borteye faced an uphill task against Egypt’s Mariam Alhodaby, losing 3-0.
Despite the mixed results, the Black Loopers are determined to redeem themselves on Day 2 (Monday) of the competition.
Cynthia Kwabi will take on Rahma Houssein of Djibouti, while Joanita Borteye will face Chantal Hirwa from Rwanda.
Emmanuel Commey will face Wassim Essid of Tunisia, and Israel Aklie will square off against Yiane Batix of Cameroon.
The ITTF Africa Cup is a premier table tennis tournament in Africa, and the Black Loopers are eager to make a mark and bring glory to Ghana.
