The Black Queens of Ghana have made their mark at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), returning home with bronze medals and heads held high.
Their journey began on a challenging note, facing defending champions South Africa in their opening game and falling 2-0. The Queens bounced back in their second group match, drawing 1-1 with Mali, a game where Jennifer Cudjoe was named Player of the Match.
With qualification on the line, the Queens showed their strength in a decisive 4-1 win over Tanzania to seal a spot in the quarterfinals. They finished second in their group with 4 points, and Chantelle Boye earned the Player of the Match honor.
In the quarterfinals, Ghana defeated Algeria 4-2 on penalties, thanks to two heroic saves from goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan, keeping the dream alive. Grace Asantewaa shone in midfield and was awarded Player of the Match.
Their semifinal clash against hosts Morocco ended in a 4-2 penalty shootout defeat after a 1-1 draw in regular time. But the Queens weren’t done yet.
They faced defending champions South Africa once more in the third-place playoff, another intense match that ended 1-1 and went to penalties. Once again, Cynthia Konlan stepped up, delivering vital saves to secure a 4-3 win and Ghana’s bronze medal!
Alice Kusi, who scored and was named Player of the Match, shared; “I am happy we are not returning empty-handed but with a bronze medal and also excited that I am the Woman of the Match.”
Head Coach Kim Lars added; “I am really excited for the future, and I’m going to keep working hard together with the coaching team and grow together. We will work and add more fresh talent to the team.”
With 4 Player of the Match awards, standout performances, and a medal to show, the Black Queens have reignited belief in Ghanaian women’s football, and the journey is just beginning.
