Ministry of Transport Advances Infrastructure

The Ministry of Transport, on August 23, 2025, announced the start of processes for a new airport in Bolgatanga, Upper East Region, as part of President Mahama’s plan to modernize Ghana’s transport sector. Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nipke shared the update at a Volta Region workshop.

The Bolgatanga project, located at Anateem near Sumbrungu, involves 7,000 acres and aims to enhance regional connectivity. The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) inspected the site, where locals cleared a 2,000-meter runway, signaling progress toward construction by late 2025.

Alongside, the government is extending the runway at Kumasi’s Prempeh Agyemang I Airport for medium-sized aircraft and reconfiguring Kotoka International Airport’s Terminal 2 to ease congestion. These initiatives support Ghana’s $1.2 billion aviation sector, per 2024 data.

The airport, backed by a public-private partnership with gold mining firms, will facilitate gold bullion transport and boost tourism, addressing accessibility issues for attractions like Paga Crocodile Pond. Over 7,000 acres were allocated in the 1980s, but delays persisted until now.

Minister Nipke also noted resumed work on the Western Railway line from Manso to Huni Valley, halted since December 2024. The projects align with Mahama’s vision for infrastructure-led growth, with GACL targeting completion to serve 500,000 regional passengers annually.
