Cape Coast Stadium Reserved for Black Stars After Renovations

Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has announced plans to renovate the Cape Coast Stadium, exclusively reserving it for the national men’s football team, the Black Stars. This move aims to address Ghana’s sports infrastructure challenges, which previously led to a temporary ban on hosting home games due to a lack of CAF-certified Category A stadiums.

Speaking to 3Sports on Sports Station, Adams confirmed that once refurbished, no club would be permitted to play their matches at the stadium. The goal is to make the 15,000-capacity Cape Coast Stadium match-ready for the Black Stars’ September and October 2025 qualifiers, after which attention will turn to upgrading the Accra and Kumasi stadia to competition standards.

Built in 2016 under President John Dramani Mahama, the stadium has hosted events such as the 13th African Games and the Black Princesses’ gold-winning performance. However, it has been sidelined for senior international matches since failing to meet CAF’s licensing standards after a FIFA World Cup qualifier against South Africa in November 2021.

Adams’ plan reflects a broader strategy to enhance Ghana’s sports facilities, ensuring they meet international requirements. This initiative hopes to bolster the Black Stars’ performance while fostering national pride.

The Ministry’s approach also emphasizes the importance of timely renovations, starting with the Cape Coast Stadium before tackling other key venues. This could signal a new era for Ghanaian sports infrastructure.
