Ghana Catholic Bishops Urges Mahama to Pass anti-LGBTQ+ bill without delay or hesitation

The Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference has called on President John Dramani Mahama to prioritize the reintroduction and passage of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, popularly known as the anti-LGBTQ+ bill.

Most Reverend Matthew Gyamfi, President of the Bishops Conference, emphasized the overwhelming public support for the bill, urging that it be passed into law without delay. “What we want is that it is made into a law,” he stated, stressing that technical arguments should not overshadow the will of the people.

President Mahama, during a meeting with the Bishops on January 14, 2025, suggested that a government-sponsored bill might be more effective than the current Private Member’s Bill. He also advocated for broad consultations and proposed revising school curriculums to incorporate moral teachings rooted in Ghanaian and African values.

The Bishops reaffirmed their commitment to standing with Ghanaians in advocating for the bill’s swift passage, urging decisive action to enshrine Ghana’s cultural and moral values into law.

The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill has sparked widespread debate, with many Ghanaians supporting its alignment with the nation’s traditions and cultural identity.
