Cement Prices in Ghana Increase to GHC 120 Per Bag

Cement prices in Ghana are set for a sharp increase across the nation, with retailers planning to add approximately GHC 9 per bag starting Thursday, February 27, 2025. Some sellers have already implemented the new rates.

Samuel Azu, a cement retailer, confirmed the adjustment:

“We have not yet increased the price, but this will take effect starting Thursday. From then on, any customer purchasing a bag of cement will need to pay GHC 120.00.”

Azu attributed the price hike to rising port tariffs and import costs, explaining that cement production relies heavily on imported raw materials.

Retailers Express Concerns Over Fluctuations

Another retailer, Bismark Owusu Tetteh, expressed frustration over the frequent price fluctuations, calling for stricter regulatory enforcement to stabilize prices.

Calls for Government Intervention

The Ghana Chamber of Construction Industry (GhCCI) has urged the government to take swift action before the situation worsens.

GhCCI CEO Emmanuel Cherry stressed the government’s role in controlling price hikes:

“The best person to assist us is the government, as they are the ones with the power. We can only talk or advise, but it is their decision to act or not.”

Background: Price Hikes & Legislative Issues

Cement prices have been a contentious issue in Ghana, with a past standoff between the Cement Manufacturers Association of Ghana and former Trade Minister K.T. Hammond over a Legislative Instrument (LI) aimed at regulating prices.

As 2025 progresses, price hikes continue, with retailers citing rising port tariffs as the primary cause.
