Chad and Sierra Leone battled to a 1-1 draw in their TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 qualifier at the Stade Olympique Alassane Ouattara in Abidjan on Wednesday night.

In a tense encounter, both teams struggled to secure three points, leaving Sierra Leone’s qualification hopes hanging by a thread.

The Group G result means title holders Cote d’Ivoire qualify for next year’s competition in Morocco as they cannot be overtaken third-placed Leone Stars.

With nine points at the top of the group, the Elephants are guaranteed at least the second position in the group as Sierra Leone, with just one match remaining, are four points adrift of the current group leaders.

The Leone Stars struck first in the 29th minute through Abu Dumbuya. His powerful shot from outside the box sailed into the top left corner, giving the visitors an early lead.

Dumbuya’s goal energized Sierra Leone, who looked to solidify their position in the Group G standings and keep their qualification chances alive.

Chad responded just five minutes later. Marius Mouandilmadji was fouled in the penalty area, and the referee awarded a penalty.

Mahamat Thiam stepped up and confidently converted, sending the ball into the top left corner to level the score at 1-1.

The second half saw both teams pushing for a winner, with Sierra Leone creating multiple chances.

In the 64th minute, veteran striker Kei Kamara’s header was saved by Chad’s goalkeeper, keeping the scoreline intact.

Substitute Issa Kallon and forward Sullay Kaikai added late pressure for Sierra Leone, but their attempts were saved.

Despite Sierra Leone’s late efforts, Chad held firm, securing their third draw of the qualifying campaign.

Leone Stars, with five points from five games, remain in third place in Group G, while Chad stays at the bottom with three points.

This result leaves Sierra Leone’s qualification chances uncertain, as they now depend on results elsewhere in the group.
