The Chinese government has issued a warning to its citizens in Ghana, urging them not to engage in illegal small-scale mining, known as galamsey. This warning comes as Ghana battles severe water pollution caused by galamsey activities, which have significantly harmed rivers and forest reserves.
Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Tong Defa, acknowledged that some Chinese individuals have been involved in the illicit practice but emphasized that the Chinese government discourages such activities. During a media interaction, he reiterated that Chinese nationals found guilty of illegal activities in Ghana should be held accountable under Ghanaian law.
The warning follows the Ghana Water Company’s announcement of water supply issues in the Central Region, including Cape Coast and Elmina. These shortages are a direct result of polluted water sources caused by galamsey operations. Citizens and environmental groups have called for stronger government action to curb the illegal mining crisis, which continues to devastate Ghana’s environment.
