Kwaebibirim Cracks Down on Illegal Mining
On August 16, 2025, the Kwaebibirim Municipal Security Council arrested three Chinese nationals for illegal mining (galamsey) along the Birim River in Akyem Abaam, near Akyem Kade, Eastern Region. The operation, led by MCE Emmanuel Kofi Nti and Police Commander ASP Barlekor Bernard, impounded two excavators used in the illegal activity.
Nti, addressing the media, warned illegal miners to cease operations in forest reserves and water bodies, vowing relentless pursuit of offenders. A manhunt is ongoing for local accomplices who fled the scene. The arrests follow a 2024 crackdown in New Abirem, where 20 were detained, including two Chinese nationals.
Galamsey has polluted the Birim River with mercury and cyanide, affecting 60% of local water sources, per Ghana Health Service reports. The task force’s actions align with national efforts to curb environmental damage, with 1,200 galamsey-related arrests in 2025.
