We’ll Investigate All Footages of Afenyo-Markin’s Confrontation With The Officer – CID Director
On May 5, 2025, a “Save the Judiciary” demonstration near Jubilee House in Accra turned heated when Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin clashed with a police officer. A viral video captured Afenyo-Markin hitting the officer’s cap, sparking widespread debate. The Ghana Police Service, under CID Director DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor, has now launched a full investigation into the incident.

Afenyo-Markin, the Effutu MP, denies assaulting the officer, claiming he was struck in the chest by Corporal Forson first, prompting his reaction. He has since petitioned the Inspector General of Police to investigate the officer’s conduct and take disciplinary action. The incident has raised questions about police accountability and parliamentary privilege.
DCOP Donkor, speaking at a press briefing on May 6, confirmed that the CID will review all available footages, including those from social media and police lenses. The investigation team has already identified the officers on duty and taken their statements to piece together the events of the confrontation.
To proceed with Afenyo-Markin’s involvement, the police have written to Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, requesting permission to question the MP. This step underscores the delicate balance between law enforcement and the protections afforded to sitting parliamentarians in Ghana.
The outcome of this investigation could set a precedent for handling disputes between public officials and security forces, as Ghanaians await updates on whether the incident is classified as an assault, a tussle, or a justified reaction during a tense protest.
