The Ghana Police Service is set to recruit sportsmen and women, with major focus on cyclists, into the service.
Director of Sports, ASP Bernice Timbilla, made the disclosure when she attended, and played major role in the 2025 edition of the Duku Festival cycling race organized by Dot Ateliers on Sunday, 17th August, 2025 at OSU.
According to ASP Timbilla, the police service is looking at recruitment as a way to give back to society by providing jobs for athletes especially cyclists who can represent the police and Ghana.
“We are working on recruiting sportsmen and women… It is something that the Ghana Police Service is looking at,” she said.
ASP Timbilla emphasized the need for good sponsorship, equipment, and collaboration with other stakeholders to improve cycling events in Ghana. She also highlighted the importance of safety and collaboration with other agencies, such as hospitals and the fire service.
“For any sports to be successful, you need motivation, you need good gadgets… If we are able to get good sponsorship, it would mean that we will be able to get good equipment, good bicycles that will be used for the cycling,” she said.
ASP Timbilla described the Duku Festival cycling race as a symbol of unity and growth, noting that it brings growth and development, and can help keep youth busy and away from criminality.
“If we continue this, it means that we are bringing a whole lot of growth and development. The youth will be brought out of the streets. A busy youth will not be looking at criminality,” she said.
The Secretary General of the Ghana Cycling Federation, Mr. Shaban Mohammed expressed gratitude to the director of sports for the initiative of empowering cyclists into the service.
According to him, he believes the recruitment of the cyclists would help propel them to achieve more, and push the sport forward.
He mentioned that discussions are currently underway with submissions of names of cyclists for consideration into the service.
The Secretary General, however, revealed plans of implementing the establishment of a full police cycling club to augment the development of the sport. He said, all these processes would be done in collaboration with relevant stakeholders within the Ghana Police Service.
The Ghana Police Service’s initiative to recruit sportsmen and women, especially cyclists is a welcome development that could help promote sports development in the country while also providing opportunities for young athletes.
