Inspector General of the Ghana Police Service, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has clarified the police’s role regarding misinformation and disinformation, emphasizing the serious threat these pose to national security. Speaking at the Ghana Report Summit in Accra on August 1, 2024, Dampare rebutted claims that the police illegally arrest individuals for spreading fake news, explaining that such actions are only taken when misinformation endangers the country’s security and safety.
Police have not arrested anybody for fake news. What we are talking about is the law that says if you start putting out things with the potency of bringing the security of the country into disrepute, we will deal with you,”
Dampare stated. He called for public cooperation in combating misinformation and stressed the need for a mindset change to address these challenges effectively.
Dampare also highlighted the importance of unity in this fight, urging Ghanaians to support efforts to maintain peace and stability. “Disinformation and misinformation are national security threats. We should walk out of this place changed as people seeking to make a difference from these challenges that threaten the security of our nation,” he said. The IGP’s message underscores the critical role of accurate information in ensuring national security.
