Tragic End of Renowned Gospel Singer Spurs National Outrage in Nigeria
Peter Nwachukwu, the widower of celebrated Nigerian gospel artist Osinachi Nwachukwu, has been sentenced to death by hanging. The sentencing comes after he was convicted of multiple charges, including culpable homicide, following the singer’s tragic death three years ago. Initially attributed to throat cancer, Osinachi’s untimely demise took a shocking turn when her family accused her husband of consistent domestic abuse leading to her death.
The case, which unfolded in the High Court in Abuja, drew massive public attention, igniting discussions on domestic violence and its repercussions. Osinachi, a beloved figure in the gospel music scene, was best known for her powerful performance in the 2017 hit song “Ekwueme,” amassing over 136 million views on YouTube.
During the trial, seventeen witnesses, including two of the couple’s children, provided testimonies that painted a distressing picture of abuse and intimidation. The judge, Justice Njideka Nwosu-Iheme, found Peter Nwachukwu guilty of all 23 charges, including verbal, emotional, and psychological abuse, as well as cruelty towards their children. The prosecution presented overwhelming evidence, convincing the court beyond reasonable doubt.
Despite the death sentence, the execution remains uncertain as Nigeria seldom enforces such rulings. Peter Nwachukwu, who maintains his innocence, retains the right to appeal. This high-profile case has sparked a national conversation about the prevalence of domestic violence and the urgent need for systemic change to protect victims.
Osinachi’s legacy continues through her music and the ongoing dialogue her tragic story has inspired, highlighting the critical need for societal awareness and reform in addressing domestic violence in Nigeria.
