Former Auditor-General Daniel Yao Domelevo has commended Organised Labour for their steadfast opposition to the sale of 60% shares in four hotels owned by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT).
In a recent interview monitored by Accra Daily Post on The Point of View with Bernard Avle, Domelevo expressed his admiration for Organised Labour’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding public assets. “Kudos to Organised Labour for standing their ground against what I think is not right. If you’re doing something on my behalf which is right, I think it’s proper to consult me, such that I know that you’re securing my interest,” Domelevo remarked.
Domelevo highlighted the pertinent role of North Tongu Member of Parliament, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, in exposing the government’s plan to sell the hotels. He questioned the ethics behind selling government assets to a cabinet minister, describing the situation as “strange” and a potential conflict of interest under Article 284 of the Ghanaian Constitution.
“So, if these things were not revealed by Ablakwa, otherwise, before you realised, it has been sold. And I find it very strange that a government will sell government property to a member of the government,” he stated. Domelevo urged institutions like Organised Labour to continue holding public officials accountable for their actions.
The former Auditor-General also criticised the delay by the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) in releasing its investigation report on Ablakwa’s petition. He pointed out the insensitivity of enforcement agencies to public concerns, emphasizing that “justice delayed is justice denied.”
Domelevo’s comments have added a significant voice to the ongoing debate over the sale of SSNIT’s hotel shares, underlining the importance of transparency and accountability in the management of public assets.
