Fire Destroys Dormaa Akwamu Methodist School, Leaving 218 Pupils Without Classrooms

A devastating fire has destroyed the 6-unit classroom block of Dormaa Akwamu Methodist Basic School in the Bono Region’s Dormaa East District. The blaze, which occurred during the Christmas break, reduced books, furniture, and essential learning materials to ashes, leaving 218 pupils displaced.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS). Meanwhile, the school has reopened, but both students and staff face severe challenges due to the loss of infrastructure.

Headteacher Datus Kwadwo Manu has made an urgent appeal for support to rebuild the classrooms, stating that the current conditions make effective teaching and learning impossible.

Peter Boakye Asiedu, Chairman of the School’s Management Committee, has also called on stakeholders, including government agencies and NGOs, to assist in restoring the school. Similarly, the Girls’ Prefect, Yvonne Owusua, pleaded for swift intervention to ensure pupils can return to conducive learning environments.

Efforts to reach the Dormaa East District Director of Education for comments have so far been unsuccessful. The school community hopes for a speedy response to their plight.
