Dr. Nii Amu Darko, president of the African Reform Movement and an independent presidential candidate, has vowed to take the Electoral Commission (EC) to court over his disqualification from the upcoming elections.
The EC, led by Jean Mensa, cited different reasons for his disqualification.
Dr. Darko received a letter dated September 15, 2024, from Benjamin Bano-Bioh, Director of Electoral Services, outlining the reasons for his disqualification including incomplete filling of nomination forms and insufficient original copies.
According to him, the disqualification by the EC does not speak well of our democratic system.
“The Electoral Commission’s actions are unacceptable and undermine the democratic process. I was asked to submit my logo and tax clearance certificate, which weren’t part of the requirement when I was filling the forms. This is very bad and doesn’t speak well of the EC.” He stated.
This development comes amid growing tensions between the EC and some political parties. The National Democratic Congress (NDC), for instance, has expressed concerns about the voter register and threatened to hold Jean Mensa accountable for any potential threats to Ghana’s democracy.
The NDC’s “Enough is Enough” demonstration on September 17 highlighted these concerns, with National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah emphasizing the need for a credible register to ensure free and fair elections.
Dr. Darko’s decision to seek refuge in the court reflects his commitment to justice and transparency.
“We will not let this injustice stand. We will fight for our rights and the rights of the Ghanaian people,” he declared.
