The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has reassured the public that the integrity of the 2024 elections will not be compromised despite the theft of Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs). In a statement, the EC emphasized that the stolen BVDs, which were not prepared for the upcoming elections, pose no threat to the election process. The EC is working closely with the police to resolve the issue and ensure that all necessary security protocols are in place.

The Commission clarified that the stolen devices are off-the-shelf and cannot be used to influence the election without undergoing the EC’s rigorous preparation process. This process includes secure data encryption, activation codes, and other technical measures that are specific to each election. The EC further highlighted that any tampered data would prevent the BVDs from functioning on Election Day.

The EC also addressed concerns about recent incidents of BVD theft in various districts, assuring the public that these events are under investigation. The Commission remains committed to maintaining the credibility of the election process and urges the public to have confidence in the security measures being implemented for the 2024 elections.
