The Electoral Commission (EC) has destroyed faulty ballot papers intended for the Ahafo and Volta Regions as part of measures to ensure transparency and integrity in the upcoming December 2024 elections. The exercise, conducted on Sunday, November 17, 2024, at Fonstat Limited, was overseen by representatives from political parties, the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), National Security, the Ghana Police Service, and the EC.
According to a statement signed by Samuel Tettey, Deputy Chairman in charge of Operations, the faulty ballot papers were identified during an audit due to serialisation errors caused by gaps in the automated numbering process. These errors necessitated reprinting, a decision communicated to stakeholders at an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on November 15, 2024.
To address the issue, the EC destroyed the defective ballots, including excess materials and printing plates, under strict supervision. The Commission emphasized its commitment to transparency by involving all stakeholders in the disposal process.
“This exercise is part of the EC’s commitment to inform political parties and stakeholders of the date and time for the disposal of electoral materials, ensuring accountability,” the EC noted in its statement.
