ECG to Take Legal Action Against Offenders
The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has raised concerns over the rising cases of meter tampering, which are causing significant financial losses. At a press conference on Monday, February 3, ECG revealed that in Dansoman alone, about 10% of the 70,000 meters installed have been tampered with, leading to under-recorded electricity consumption.

Acting Managing Director, David Boadi Asamoah, issued a stern warning, stating that anyone caught engaging in meter tampering will face prosecution.
“We will conduct thorough investigations, and there are laws in this country. After our investigations, law enforcement agencies like the police will take over. Once the police complete their work, the case will proceed to court, where the law will be applied because this is stealing—it’s a criminal offense,” he emphasized.
No One Will Be Spared
ECG assured the public that no one involved—whether a contractor, electrician, or customer—will be spared if found guilty of illegal meter manipulation.
“I must assure you, that ECG will not spare anybody, be it a contractor, an electrician, or whosoever. If you are caught, you will face the consequences,” Boadi Asamoah stated.
Financial & Economic Impact of Meter Tampering
The ECG boss lamented the severe impact of such illegal acts on the company’s operations, warning that collusion between customers and contract workers to manipulate meters is weakening ECG’s financial stability and harming Ghana’s economic growth.
He stressed that this unpatriotic behavior is undermining efforts to improve power distribution, urging the public to report any cases of meter tampering to help curb the menace.
