Formally Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger is Out of ECOWAS as of 01/29//2025
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has officially recognized the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger from the regional bloc, effective Wednesday, January 29, 2025.
In a statement issued by the ECOWAS Commission, the organization reaffirmed its commitment to regional solidarity and announced transitional measures to mitigate disruptions for citizens and businesses during this period.
The departure of these three nations represents a significant shift in West Africa’s regional landscape, as they have historically played vital roles in ECOWAS’ integration efforts. Despite their exit, ECOWAS expressed its willingness to maintain open communication and future collaboration with the withdrawing states.
To ensure minimal disruption, ECOWAS has directed member states to continue recognizing national passports and identity cards bearing the ECOWAS logo for citizens of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger. Additionally, goods and services from these countries will still benefit from the ECOWAS Trade Liberalization Scheme (ETLS) and existing investment policies.
Furthermore, citizens of these nations will retain their rights to visa-free movement, residence, and business establishment within ECOWAS territories, as per existing agreements. These provisions will remain in place until a long-term engagement framework is established by the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.
The withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger demonstrates the shifting regional alliances and will likely reshape West African economic and political dynamics in the years ahead.
