Audit Aims to Enhance Transparency and Educational Infrastructure in Public Universities

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has directed the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to conduct a comprehensive audit of how public universities utilize their internally generated funds (IGFs). This initiative seeks to ensure transparency and assess the impact of these funds on enhancing teaching and learning infrastructure.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Dr. Paul Effah Conference Hall on June 3, Minister Iddrisu emphasized the importance of accountability in the use of IGFs. He highlighted the need for universities to demonstrate how these funds contribute to expanding access to quality higher education, particularly through the provision of residential halls and lecture theatres.

In addition to the audit directive, the Minister proposed the establishment of polytechnics in all 16 regions of Ghana. This move aims to bridge the gap between secondary and tertiary education by equipping students with practical, job-ready skills, thereby aligning educational outcomes with labor market demands.

Minister Iddrisu called on GTEC to develop a blueprint for this initiative, suggesting that the creation of regional polytechnics could significantly expand access to higher education focused on employability and industry relevance.

These measures are part of a broader effort by the Ministry of Education to align tertiary education with the country’s economic needs while ensuring financial accountability within public institutions.
