Court Sentences Men Over Assault During Parliamentary Rerun

The Accra Circuit Court has sentenced eight men involved in electoral violence during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun. Each convict must pay a fine of 500 penalty units (₵6,000) or serve 24 months in prison if they default.

The convicts — aged between 32 and 46 — pleaded guilty to four counts of assault. They admitted to attacking political figures during the rerun and were convicted on their own pleas.

Judge Isaac Addo noted their remorse and cautioned them against electoral violence, warning that such acts could destabilize the country. He urged the convicts, and the youth more broadly, to become advocates for peaceful elections.

The court ruled that the men must pay fines for each count of assault, but lawyers for the convicts argued their clients had acted in self-defense. They welcomed the ruling, describing it as fair.

The case stemmed from an incident on July 11, 2025, when former Fisheries Minister Hawa Koomson and two NPP members were attacked at polling stations. Police intervened, and after investigations, the accused admitted guilt in court.
