Accra, Ghana – March 09, 2025 – After securing a commendable second place in the Greater Accra Men’s Volleyball League, the Elwak Wings men’s volleyball team is setting its sights on the continental stage as they prepare for the annual African Clubs Championship in Libya. The prestigious tournament, scheduled to run from April 17 to April 30, will bring together 25 of Africa’s top volleyball clubs, with Elwak Wings proudly representing Ghana.
The championship will feature a formidable lineup of teams, including Le Club WAT Tlemcen and Le Club Castle from Algeria, Mouloudia Sportive de Boy Salem from Tunisia, Al Ahly Sporting Club and Zamalek Sporting Club from Egypt, and AS Finances from Benin. Other notable contenders include Kenya Ports Authority, General Service Unit, and Kenyan Prisons from Kenya, as well as Volleyball Club Emmanuel and Volleybay Club Espoir from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The roster is rounded out by teams such as Army Patriotique Du Rwanda, Swehly Sports Club and Al Nasser from Libya, Esperance Sportive De Tunis from Tunisia, Port Autonome De Douala Volleyball, Cameroon Sport Volleyball, and Litto Team Volleyball from Cameroon, alongside Zarasclo Volleyball from the Central African Republic, Rukinzo Volleyball Club from Burundi, Muger Cement Factory from Ethiopia, University of Zimbabwe Wolves, and Ittihad Club from Libya.
The tournament will kick off with a round-robin format, where all teams will face off before advancing to the knockout stages, including the round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, and the grand final. Elwak Wings is slated to depart for Libya in early April to compete for the continental title.
However, despite their on-court success and rigorous training, the team faces significant financial hurdles that threaten their participation.
The CEO of Elwak Wings has issued an urgent appeal for support from corporate entities, government agencies, and the public to ensure the team can proudly carry the Ghanaian flag to Libya.
“We are going to represent Ghana and hoist the Ghana flag high. We appeal to corporate bodies and agencies to come to our aid. We also call on the Ministry of Sports and Recreation for support,” the CEO told the Daily Graphic. He emphasized that while the team is training intensely for the competition, their ability to participate hinges on overcoming these financial constraints.
The CEO also directed a plea to the newly appointed Sports Minister, Mr. Kofi Adams, urging him to intervene and secure the necessary resources. “We are appealing to the new Sports Minister to come to our aid and ensure we can represent Ghana in this tournament,” he said.
As the countdown to April 17 begins, all eyes are on Elwak Wings—and the response to their call for help—as they strive to make their mark on the African volleyball stage.
