Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Ranking Member on Parliament’s Economy and Development Committee, has disclosed that electricity tariffs in Ghana will now be reviewed every three months. He explained that this policy is part of the government’s broader strategy to recover costs and stabilise the financial health of the energy sector.
Addressing the press on March 13, 2025, Oppong Nkrumah stated that the adjustments are designed to reflect changes in production costs, fuel prices, and fluctuations in exchange rates. According to him, the policy aims to align tariff changes with the realities of the energy market.
However, the Ranking Member expressed concerns about the adverse effects of frequent tariff reviews on households and businesses. He highlighted that many Ghanaians are already grappling with a high cost of living, warning that this approach could exacerbate their struggles. “Frequent adjustments could place an additional burden on citizens,” he cautioned.
Oppong Nkrumah also criticised the government for failing to implement cushioning measures to mitigate the effects of these tariff hikes. He argued that the absence of such measures could lead to increased hardships for consumers and undermine the competitiveness of Ghanaian businesses.
The Ranking Member called on the government to prioritise efficiency in the energy sector as a more sustainable solution. He urged greater transparency in pricing mechanisms and emphasised the need for broader stakeholder engagement to balance sustainability with affordability.
