Energy Minister-Designate Advocates Selling Prepaid Meters
John Jinapor, Ghana’s Minister of Energy-designate, has proposed the sale of prepaid meters as a solution to address faulty meters and enhance accessibility nationwide.
Speaking before the Appointments Committee on January 13, 2025, Jinapor highlighted the need to leverage technology to tackle the widespread issues with prepaid meters in the country.
He disclosed that of the 5.2 million meters available through the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), only 4.8 million are functional. Approximately 3 million meters are either faulty or outdated, with at least 2.9 million requiring immediate replacement to meet growing demand.
Jinapor noted that many individuals with malfunctioning meters struggle to secure replacements. To address this, he proposed selling prepaid meters and licensing professionals to install them. “By making meters readily available, we can effectively resolve the problem,” he explained.
The initiative aims to streamline the availability of prepaid meters and ensure efficient meter usage across Ghana, improving the overall reliability of the country’s energy infrastructure.
