ECG’s Unclaimed Containers Under Investigation for Financial Losses
Ghana’s Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has launched a five-member committee to investigate the 2,500 uncleared containers procured by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and abandoned at the port.
The containers, linked to former ECG Managing Director Samuel Dubik Mahama, contain materials purchased under the previous administration. Their prolonged stay has accrued GH¢1.5 billion in demurrage charges, significantly impacting Ghana’s finances.
The committee, chaired by Prof. Innocent Senyo Akwasi, has one month to assess ECG’s procurement practices, determine the cost and liabilities, and recommend solutions. Other members include Georgette Emefa Fuga, Vivian Ablakely, Abdulai Rahman, and Noble Yaw Kyei Addonu.
Reports suggest ECG’s procurement processes were non-transparent, with materials such as reflective vests, socks, and branded clothing being stockpiled for up to 20 years. The Energy Minister has vowed to hold accountable those responsible for any financial mismanagement.
“We cannot sit idle and allow GH¢1.5 billion to be lost due to procurement failures,” Jinapor emphasized.
Shortly after assuming office, Jinapor visited the Tema Harbour to assess the containers. He described the situation as unacceptable and reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring efficiency and accountability in the energy sector.
Following the committee’s report, the Ministry will collaborate with the Attorney General’s Office to take legal action where necessary.
Jinapor has also engaged the Public Utility Workers Union (PUWU) to foster transparency and prevent similar financial losses in the future.
