Joint Effort Against Human Trafficking Reveals Plight of Victims

Two hundred and nineteen individuals from the West African sub-region, trafficked into Ghana under the guise of lucrative job offers, have been rescued by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). This operation was a joint effort involving EOCO, the Criminal Investigations Department of the Ghana Police Service, and the military. Speaking at a press conference, Acting Executive Director of EOCO, Abdul Bashiru Dapilah, revealed that the victims were held hostage and forced into cybercrime activities instead of the promised jobs.

The successful operation led to the arrest of suspects at Isak Estates in Oyarifa. According to Mr. Dapilah, the victims were lured with the prospect of high-paying jobs only to be confined and coerced into illegal activities. The raid uncovered numerous laptops, personal belongings, and internet equipment. Though most victims were Nigerians, investigations suggest the involvement of some Ghanaians in the trafficking network.

Current investigations aim to identify the trafficking ring and distinguish between victims, suspects, and juveniles. As the screening process unfolds, the Nigerian High Commission has encouraged cooperation with authorities, reaffirming support for the victims. EOCO and the CID are working on plans to reunite the victims with their families.

Abdul Dapilah assured that the screening should conclude soon, enabling arrangements for the victims’ return to Nigeria. EOCO and CID have also strategised to intensify collaboration and resource sharing to combat human trafficking and cybercrime effectively. They remain committed to dismantling such networks and preventing future incidents.
