Uncle Claims Foul Play in MP’s Sudden Death
Eugene Opoku-Acheampong, uncle of the late Akwatia MP Ernest Yaw Kumi, alleged on Movement TV on July 8, 2025, that Kumi’s death on July 7 was not natural but a “spiritually orchestrated” act driven by envy over his parliamentary seat. Kumi, a first-time NPP MP, died after a short illness, as reported by GhanaWeb.
Opoku-Acheampong, Akwatia’s NPP constituency secretary, claimed talks of a by-election to replace Kumi were circulating while he was alive, hinting at foul play. Kumi’s brother reported he suffered severe heart pains after returning from a trip, passing away at Lister Hospital despite treatment. No official cause of death has been confirmed.
Kumi, 40, faced legal battles over his 2024 election, with the Supreme Court overturning a contempt conviction on June 11, 2025. Colleagues like Sammi Awuku cited stress from these disputes as a factor in his death, noting Kumi’s plan to launch a community foundation was delayed by litigation.
Tributes poured in from NPP and NDC MPs, with Minority Leader Afenyo-Markin calling Kumi’s death a “devastating loss.” Former President Akufo-Addo and Dr. Bawumia mourned him as a dedicated patriot. His seat was draped in red cloth in Parliament as a tribute.
The allegations have stirred debate, with no evidence yet supporting foul play. Police are not investigating unnatural causes, but the family’s claims have fueled speculation in Akwatia. The community awaits clarity, as Kumi’s death leaves a void in the constituency and the NPP.
