Residents in Yemassee, South Carolina, are on high alert after 43 young rhesus macaque monkeys escaped from the Alpha Genesis Primate Research Center on Wednesday. The unexpected breakout has led to a swift response from local and state authorities as they work to capture the agile primates, who remain at large as of Thursday.

The monkeys, described as very young females weighing around 6-7 pounds, have reportedly never been used for testing and are considered disease-free. “We want to assure the community that there is no health risk associated with these animals,” stated local police via social media, aiming to calm concerns.

Efforts to locate and recapture the monkeys include the placement of traps throughout the area, baited to attract the animals, as well as the use of thermal imaging technology. Police are coordinating closely with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office and state wildlife officials to ensure a safe, humane approach.

Residents are urged not to approach or attempt to capture the monkeys and are advised to secure their homes. Sightings should be reported by calling 911, authorities emphasized.
