Explosion at Mining Explosives Shops in Odumase Kills One, Injures Firefighters
A devastating explosion at shops dealing in mining explosives in Odumase, near Konongo in the Asante Akyem Central Municipality of the Ashanti Region has claimed one life and left several others injured, including firefighters.
The fire reportedly started in one of the shops selling dynamites and other mining explosives, triggering a powerful blast that damaged buildings and shook the entire area.
The explosion, which occurred just meters away from a fuel station, has sparked renewed concerns over safety regulations regarding the storage and sale of explosives in populated areas.
Authorities confirmed the death of a resident who attempted to warn firefighters about the looming danger.
“He was trying to warn the firefighters to back off, but before he could escape, the explosion occurred. He was severely injured, and I’ve been told he has passed,” said Divisional Officer Grade 2 Joe Bryden, the Asante Akyem Central Municipal Fire Commander, in an interview with Luv FM.
Several people sustained injuries, with victims rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. Among them were two firefighters, one of whom collapsed after the fire tender he was operating was caught in the explosion’s impact.
The blast caused extensive damage, leaving parts of the area in ruins, with multiple buildings suffering structural collapse.
Authorities are currently assessing the full extent of the casualties and destruction, while investigations into the cause of the explosion are ongoing.
This tragic incident has once again highlighted the dangers associated with storing and selling mining explosives in residential areas.
Residents and officials are calling for stricter safety regulations to prevent future occurrences and ensure public safety.
