Accra Court Sets GH¢100,000 Bail for TikTok Star
An Accra Circuit Court granted bail to TikTok personality Prince Ofori, known as Fante Comedy, on August 13, 2025, for GH¢100,000 with three sureties, two of whom must be employed. Ofori, arrested on August 12 with two others, faces charges of issuing a death threat and spreading false news about the August 6 helicopter crash.
The crash in Adansi Akrofuom, Ashanti Region, killed eight, including two cabinet ministers. The Ghana Police Service, which is probing misinformation fueling public unrest, has linked Ofori’s social media posts to inflammatory content. His counsel’s bail application was approved, requiring him to surrender his passport to the police.
The court, presided over by Judge Samuel Bright Acquah, adjourned the case to August 25, 2025, for Ofori’s reappearance. The arrests are part of a broader crackdown on misinformation, with over 15 individuals questioned since the tragedy, which sparked widespread online speculation and distress.
Fante Comedy, with 1.2 million TikTok followers, allegedly posted unverified claims about the crash’s cause, prompting police action. The case reflects Ghana’s efforts to curb false narratives, especially after viral images exacerbated the grief of victims’ families, as noted by Communications Minister Samuel George.
The investigation, supported by the Cybercrime Unit, continues to identify others spreading false information. Ofori’s bail conditions aim to ensure compliance while allowing legal proceedings to address the impact of social media on public safety.
