A Historic Fashion Event in Tamale
A fashion week for the Blackstar Experience will take place in Tamale, Ghana, as revealed by coordinator Rex Omar. This event marks a significant step in decentralizing cultural activities from urban centers like Accra and Kumasi, promoting a more inclusive national identity.
The Temale Fashion Week, set for July, promises to be a landmark occasion with the President of Ghana walking the runway—a historic first. Rex Omar emphasized the event’s potential to draw international designers and visitors to Tamale, leveraging the city’s new international airport to position it as a global fashion destination.
Tamale’s selection as the venue aligns with its growing cultural infrastructure, notably the Red Clay Studio, established in 2020 by artist Ibrahim Mahama. This art space, an extension of the Savannah Centre for Contemporary Art, supports the event’s mission to showcase Ghanaian creativity and foster artistic innovation.

Rex Omar’s vision extends beyond fashion, aiming to elevate Ghanaian art and culture on a global stage. By integrating local elements like Ghana Food Month into the Blackstar Experience, he hopes to celebrate the nation’s heritage while encouraging sustainable practices like eating locally grown food.
This initiative, backed by the President’s involvement, could transform Tamale into a cultural hub, attracting global attention and reinforcing Ghana’s unique identity through creativity and tradition.
