Tragic Mob Attack in Kotwi Highlights Vigilante Issues

A man believed to be in his thirties tragically died after a mob assault in Kotwi, Atwima Kwanwoma District, Ashanti Region, on Monday, May 5. Allegedly, the man stole a mobile phone, prompting an immediate and violent response from bystanders. Unfortunately, bystanders quickly caught up with him, unleashing a brutal beating.

The unfamiliar man was suspected of being part of a group troubling the community, which alarmed local residents. Although the Trede Police Station officers rushed to the scene, the mob had dispersed before their arrival, leaving the man dead on the ground.

John Justice Ankomah, the Assembly Member for the Kotwi Twenease Electoral Area, expressed his dismay over the incident. He confirmed that traders had informed him of the theft, and he contacted the police immediately. Ankomah condemned the act of mob justice and appealed to residents to allow law enforcement to handle such situations.

The body has been transferred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital morgue as the police search for those responsible. The Brofoyedru police have launched a manhunt amid increasing calls for a stronger security presence in the area. The Assembly Member noted that this was not an isolated incident; a similar theft occurred recently, where the suspect managed to escape.

As investigations continue, community leaders and law enforcement urge vigilance and cooperation to prevent further incidents of mob violence, stressing the importance of justice through legal channels.
