Western Region Commander Urges Protection for Firefighters
Assistant Chief Fire Officer (ACFO) II David Asah Darko, Western Regional Commander of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), has called for stringent legal measures against individuals who vandalize fire service equipment or attack firefighters. Speaking at a durbar marking International Firefighters’ Day (IFFD) on May 4, 2025, at the GNFS headquarters in Fijai, Sekondi-Takoradi, he emphasized that such acts are crimes against communities and humanity.
The event, themed “Appreciating our heroes, say no to firefighter assault and fire truck vandalism,” highlighted the need for public respect toward firefighters. ACFO II Darko condemned mob attacks on firefighters and fire stations, warning that such actions will no longer be tolerated. He urged law enforcement to ensure perpetrators face consequences to deter future incidents.
Despite these challenges, ACFO II Darko reaffirmed the GNFS’s commitment to protecting lives and property. He noted that firefighters remain dedicated to creating safe, fire-incident-free communities, even at great personal risk. The durbar included a minute’s silence, flag hoisting, and coin-laying to honor fallen firefighters, reflecting the solemnity of IFFD.
Mr. Anthony Quarshie, Acting Western Regional Coordinating Director, praised the bravery of firefighters and called on the public to safeguard them from unwarranted attacks. Observed annually on May 4, IFFD celebrates the sacrifices of firefighters worldwide, recognizing their selfless service to society.
