Military Collaboration Leads to Arrest of 28 Suspects in Western North
The Forestry Commission, in a joint operation with the military, has confiscated 85 excavators, two bulldozers, and several generators used in illegal mining (galamsey) across forest reserves in Ghana’s Western North Region.
The three-week operation, codenamed Halt, also resulted in the arrest of 28 suspects, including four Chinese nationals.
Twelve miners were apprehended in the Tano Anwia Forest Reserve, six in the Sui Forest Reserve, four in the Anhwianso South Forest Reserve, and six in the Boin River Forest Reserve. Local residents praised the crackdown, citing severe environmental damage, including polluted water bodies and destroyed farmlands. However, they criticized the regional minister for inadequate action against illegal mining.
In a related operation, six illegal loggers were arrested, and ten trucks carrying timber were seized in various reserves.
