Wedding Day Arrest: Man Accused of Visa Fraud Appears in Court
Samuel Issah Abdulai, a 28-year-old driver, was arrested on his wedding day for allegedly defrauding three individuals of a total of GH₵352,000 under the guise of securing visas. The visas promised included electronic permits to Mongolia, Georgia, Albania, and Malaysia. However, they were later found to be fake.
The Accra Circuit Court, presided over by Mr. Samuel Bright Acquah, granted Abdulai bail at GH₵150,000 with three sureties, one to be justified. The accused is required to report to the police every two weeks. Abdulai pleaded not guilty to charges of defrauding by false pretenses and forgery of documents.
Prosecutors, led by Chief Inspector Daniel Danku, revealed that Abdulai and an accomplice posted adverts online claiming to provide work visas to countries such as Belarus and Albania. The complainants, traders Ohenewa Sarah and Matilda Ayaaba, alongside businesswoman Aisha Ahmed, handed over substantial sums, only for Abdulai to disappear after receiving the money.
After resurfacing in December 2024, Abdulai sent the complainants what he claimed were electronic visas, raising their suspicions. Their investigations confirmed the visas were fake, leading to his dramatic arrest at his wedding in Nkawie in the Ashanti Region.
The court case continues as authorities delve deeper into the fraudulent activities, with victims still coming forward. The incident highlights the ongoing issue of visa scams and the need for vigilance.
