Crackdown on Illegal Mining Yields Multiple Arrests and Equipment Seizures

In a coordinated operation against illegal mining, also known as galamsey, personnel from the Police Service, Immigration Service, Minerals Commission, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and national security have arrested several individuals and seized six excavators. Those detained include Burkinabe, Indian, and Chinese nationals, as well as undocumented Ghanaian miners.

Speaking from Asiwa in the Bosomefreho District, Captain (Retired) John Jabari, Acting Ashanti Regional Security Coordinator, reaffirmed the government’s resolve to eradicate illegal mining. He condemned the environmental destruction caused by galamsey, stressing its harmful effects on water bodies, roads, and communities. Captain Jabari emphasized that efforts would continue until significant progress is made.

The operation forms part of a strategic approach to enforcing mining laws and safeguarding natural resources. Captain Jabari described the security efforts as structured and coordinated to ensure maximum impact. Authorities have also raised concerns about unregulated suppliers of mining equipment, urging stricter oversight to prevent machinery from being used in illegal activities.

The crackdown highlights the government’s determination to address the escalating environmental crisis caused by galamsey. Mining shops operating without proper regulation remain a key focus, with officials considering tighter measures to curb the supply chain.

With ongoing operations across the region, the government aims to intensify enforcement and collaborate with stakeholders to protect the environment and affected communities. The crackdown serves as a warning to illegal miners and their enablers.
