The Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council (GARCC), in collaboration with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and the Frankel Foundation for Diabetics, will commemorate this World Diabetes Day with a free diabetic screening and health education programme on Friday, 14th November 2025.

The event to be held at the forecourt of the Accra City Hall (AMA Head Office) would focus on diabetes and Non-Communicable Chronic Diseases (NCCDs) like hypertension and forms part of the Assembly’s intensified campaign to create awareness, promote early detection, and provide support for individuals living with diabetes.

Speaking ahead of the event, the Mayor of Accra, Hon Michael Kpakpo Allotey said the exercise was being organised in response to the growing incidence of diabetes within the metropolis, adding that between January and June 2025 alone, the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital recorded over 3,000 diabetes referrals and 2,000 cases of kidney-related complications, signalling the urgent need for proactive public health interventions.

Mayor Allotey emphasised that the programme would bring together key stakeholders from the health sector, development partners, and the general public under the theme of promoting awareness, education, and early intervention.

He said the event would be graced by high-profile dignitaries, including the Regional Minister, Hon. Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, health professionals, and civic organisations committed to advancing community health and wellness under the “Resetting Accra” public health improvement agenda.

He disclosed that the event would host health screening and education sessions for diabetes, hypertension, and other NCCDs, as well as counselling, referrals, and medication support where necessary.

He pointed out that educational materials and advocacy information would also be distributed to raise public awareness on healthy lifestyle practices and urged the public to come in their numbers.

He said the event was designed to encourage residents to adopt preventive health habits, attend regular check-ups, and support national efforts to curb the increasing burden of diabetes and related conditions in the Greater Accra Region.
