The Acting Head of the Transport Department of the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA), Madam Vivian Aborah, has paid a courtesy call on the leadership of the Ghana Cycling Federation (GCF) as part of preparations towards a comprehensive Road Safety Training Program within the metropolis.

The meeting, held at the Federation’s office in Accra, highlighted the Assembly’s commitment to promoting road safety, encouraging healthy lifestyles, and showcasing the benefits of cycling for both recreation and professional sport.

As part of the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly’s broader vision, Madam Vivian Aborah announced the STMA Road Safety and Cycling Training Program, scheduled for 30th October 2025. The program aims to sensitize and equip road users on safety practices, responsible cycling, and shared road culture.

This initiative aligns with the Assembly’s mission to reduce road accidents, enhance urban mobility, and foster a culture of fitness and wellness across the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis.

During discussions between the STMA and officials of the Ghana Cycling Federation, key areas of collaboration included:

Promotion of recreational cycling events within the metropolis.

Advancement of cycling for health, fitness, and improved well-being.

Support for competitive and community cycling events.

Introduction of the Ghana Cycling Federation’s ongoing School Cycling Project, currently active in the Greater Accra Metropolis, to be extended to the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis. The project aims to nurture young talent and instill road safety awareness from an early age.

The Ghana Cycling Federation welcomed the collaboration and reaffirmed its readiness to support the STMA in its efforts to create a safer, healthier, and more cycling-friendly environment in the metropolis.

The Federation also acknowledged the valuable advice of Hon. Kobena Woyome, former Member of Parliament and Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Sports, Culture and Arts, emphasizing the need for stronger collaboration with the Ministry of Roads and Highways. As the cycling field shares infrastructure with vehicular traffic, the Federation reiterated the importance of incorporating dedicated cycling lanes—particularly for beginners, children, and cycling enthusiasts—into all new road construction projects in Ghana.

Cycling remains a sport, a healthy means of transportation, and an environmentally friendly, emission-free mode of mobility.

The STMA therefore calls on stakeholders, corporate partners, and the general public to support these initiatives as the Assembly continues to build a modern, safe, and sustainable transport system that meets the needs of all road users.
