During his two-day official visit to Ghana, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed admiration for Ghanaian youth, particularly those in tertiary institutions. He described them as fascinating and full of innovative ideas that have the potential to drive Ghana’s development. Chancellor Scholz’s visit marked the second time a German Chancellor had visited Ghana in the last seven years. His remarks came during a lunch held in his honor at the Jubilee House in Accra.
As part of his visit, Chancellor Scholz visited Ashesi University in the Eastern Region of Ghana and engaged with students. He found their perspectives on the future to be impressive and emphasized the importance of innovations in shaping the future of both Ghana and Germany. Ghana’s excellent universities and its partnership with Germany in areas like science and research were highlighted.
Chancellor Scholz was accompanied by a high-level business delegation, and discussions took place on crucial topics for Ghana’s further development, including the electricity grid and infrastructure development. The German Chancellor also mentioned Ghana’s active participation in the German Compact with Africa and its commitment to democracy and a rule-based international order.
He expressed the need for African countries to have ample and equal representation in international bodies such as the UN Security Council. Chancellor Scholz supported Ghana’s advocacy for permanent African seats in the UN Security Council. The visit aimed to strengthen bilateral relations, and it was noted that Ghana is Germany’s fourth largest trading partner in sub-Saharan Africa.
