In a significant move, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has taken decisive action against Dr. Mrs. Shine Agatha Ofori, the headmistress of West Africa Senior High School (WASS), for allegedly engaging in unauthorized monetary collections from students. The GES’s Head of the Public Relations Unit, Cassandra Twum Ampofo, issued a press release in Accra, announcing the interdiction and instructing Dr. Ofori to hand over the school’s administration to the Regional Director of Education.
The action against Dr. Ofori will remain in effect until the Regional Disciplinary Committee concludes its investigation and reaches a final determination on the case. This recent incident has raised concerns within the educational community, as it is not the first of its kind. Earlier in 2023, the GES had interdicted Mr. Kenneth Agbomadzi, the headmaster of Fijai Senior High School in Sekondi, on similar charges of allegedly imposing illegal fees on students. However, Mr. Agbomadzi was reinstated in May 2023 after an investigative committee cleared him of any wrongdoing.
Responding to the recurring issue of unauthorized fee collections, the GES reiterated its strong stance against such practices. The management issued a stern warning, expressing their disapproval of any form of illegal monetary collection within Ghana’s educational institutions. The GES emphasized its commitment to promoting fair and transparent practices to maintain the integrity of the country’s educational system.
The case of Dr. Mrs. Shine Agatha Ofori serves as yet another reminder of the GES’s dedication to ensuring accountability and fairness among school administrators. As the Regional Disciplinary Committee proceeds with its investigation, the fate of Dr. Ofori’s position as headmistress hangs in the balance. Ghana’s education community eagerly awaits the committee’s verdict and the subsequent course of action taken by the GES
