Teachers Face Sack for Helping Students Cheat in BECE
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has warned teachers and invigilators to avoid helping students cheat during the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). The GES said anyone caught could lose their job. This warning came during a press briefing in Accra on June 9, 2025, as the BECE was set to begin on June 11.
GES Director-General, Professor Ernest Kofi Davis, said cheating in exams hurts the education system by making it hard to measure students’ true abilities. He stressed that teachers and invigilators must act as good role models. Those caught assisting students could face serious punishment, including being fired from their jobs.

The GES called on parents, students, and school heads to work together to stop exam malpractice. Davis urged students not to rely on cheating or outside help to pass. He also praised teachers and schools for preparing students well for the exams, which test junior high school students before they move to senior high school.
Past BECE exams have seen cheating incidents, with 18 teachers and invigilators arrested in 2024 for helping students. The GES and the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) are increasing security to ensure fair exams. This includes banning mobile phones and thoroughly checking students before they enter exam halls.
With over 600,000 students expected to take the 2025 BECE, the GES is pushing for a clean process. They want everyone involved to follow the rules to protect the education system’s integrity and ensure students succeed through hard work.
